2016 – 2020: Pre Exposure Prophylaxis Efficacy and Feasibility Among Male Sex Workers Project
KILIFI COUNTY
In 2016, we expanded into Coast Province to launch a four-year project: Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Efficacy and Feasibility among Male Sex Workers (MSWs): A demonstration project. Supported by the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, the project was implemented in Kilifi County. With recent regulatory approval for the use of the drug Truvada® for HIV prevention among key populations by the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board, this is among the first projects in Kenya to look at the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of using PrEP with MSWs.
Our key achievements include:
- Reaching over 200 MSWs with 97% retention rates, the results will inform wider scale-up of PrEP for prevention among this highly vulnerable group.
