Advocating for women’s rights & freedom from gender-based violence (GBV)
HealthRight Kenya’s programming has expanded over the years to respond to violence against women and girls. Grounded in empowerment and gender equality principles, we support Community Based Operators (CBOs) and local government to define areas for partnership.
In 2019, HealthRight, University of Nairobi and New York University began a Grand Challenges Canada one-year operational research study aimed at Empowering Adolescents: Building Resilience to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). By developing an innovative digital relationship toolkit using integrated approaches, our team has worked with communities Togaren and Webuye West sub-counties in Bungoma County to enhance awareness of and reduce IPV incidents among adolescents.
Two local youth groups have led the process of developing multi level strategies for IPV prevention in partnership, which include mental health self-assessment, tailored health literacy materials and accessible intervention services for high-risk youth.
Key achievements include:
- An estimated 64,000 people reached through broadcasted radio programs.
- IPV training for 40 youth leads completed in the two project sub-counties and 20 HCWs and 40 youth leads recruited as IPT participants.
- 225 people reached—120 respondents in the first phase and 95 in the second phase—through the digital toolkit surveys and community forums.
